Biofeedback training can be
used to help in the treatment of many medical, dental, pain-related,
and addition problems. Goals for most biofeedback patients include:
During biofeedback training, you will gain insight into your current health and living habits. Biofeedback will help you change the physical and mental behaviors internal to your body that are barriers to good emotional and physical health. Medical research has taught us the body sometimes functions in ways that are actually detrimental to our well being. For example, clenched muscles may continue to affect surrounding tissue and bodily movement after the physical need for clenching has gone away. Over time, this can result in chronic muscular pain. Or additions can handicap our lives and leave us unable to stop the personal destruction. Biofeedback training can be the most effective way to retrain our body to eliminate behaviors or responses that are no longer effective. |

Biofeedback is... Biofeedback is a recognized medical modality for changing or modifying physical responses and behaviors. Learning biofeedback is like learning any new activity where your mind controls the actions or your body - playing golf, riding a bicycle, or playing the piano. As with watching your golf swing on video, you will watch the responses of your body on a computer and learn to make adjustments so your health improves.
If you have
ever made a decision for yourself by looking into a mirror, weighing
on a bathroom scale, or taking your body temperature with a
thermometer, you have practiced biofeedback. Biofeedback therapy
uses tools that are designed to give you changing information
instantaneously, so that you can watch your body changing in
positive ways and see your progress toward better health. Training takes place in a comfortable
setting with computerized equipment to provide effective biofeedback
training and skill. A professional, supportive, relaxed environment
will help you progress quickly to improved levels of well-being.
Many individuals find that learning biofeedback skills is the
beginning of a lifetime of new achievements and personal growth. Biofeedback training uses non-invasive sensors applied to your skin to give you feedback about your body. The feedback allows you to manage or change your body and emotional responses as you watch the result of your efforts. As you progress, you will no longer need the instruments and will be able to continue the learned biofeedback response, on your own, as part of your normal daily activity. Biofeedback users have been able to manage or eliminate pain, reduce or eliminate medications, overcome anxiety and depression, control headaches, reduce the craving and use of addictive substances, resolve past trauma, and make significant mental and emotional changes that improve health. Most people are able to achieve permanent results. What about

Neurofeedback is... Neurofeedback is a specialized area of biofeedback. It is also known as EEG (electroencephalograph) biofeedback. Information about the current functioning of the brain is presented to the patient. The patient with the help of the clinician may make changes in the usage of the brain. The brain is very adaptable, and capable of learning new patterns of use and function very quickly. It can also learn to improve its own performance, if only it is given cues about what to change. By making information available to the brain about how it is functioning, and asking it to make adjustments, it can do so. When the mature brain is doing a good job of regulating itself, and the person is alert and attentive, the brain waves -usually shown as an EEG tracing- show a particular pattern. A person, with no help, can usually maintain this particular pattern. However, with alertness and attention become less than optimal, it may signal a need for a change in brain functioning as confirmed by a change in brain wave patterns. This may be evidenced by changes in mood, sleep patterns, eating patterns, focus of attention, ability to retain new information, or the loss of ability to process information quickly and effectively. With the help of the clinician, a patient is challenged to maintain this current alert and attentive state, or guided in learning how to enhance alertness and attention by using EEG feedback. Gradually, the brain learns, just like it learns how to perform any new task. And like with other learning, the brain can retain the new skill. Neurofeedback training is a painless, non-invasive procedure. These are very similar to super-sensitive microphones. One or more sensors are placed on the scalp and ear(s). The brain waves are monitored by means of computer-based instruments that processes the signals from the brain and provides the proper feedback. This is displayed to the patient by means of a video display, along with audio signals. The patient is asked to make changes in the display by using his/her brain - changing the focus of attention in some way. Gradually, the brain responds to the feedback being presented with goals for change being "marked" on the display. Very quickly and painlessly, new brain wave patterns begin to occur. The new pattern is "coached" through the video feedback to change toward one which is closer to what is normally observed in most individuals who are not having similar complaints. There is an ever-increasing body of research literature about the efficacy of neurofeedback. Ask Dr. Wayland or one of his clinicians about research that may pertain to your area(s) of interest. Some of the presenting issues and disorders which have shown significant treatment efficacy, either improvement or remission, with neurofeedback are: |
